Reps oppose proposed electricity tariff increase
The House of Representatives has demanded that the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) step down the proposed plan to raise electricity tariff.
The resolution was passed by the lower legislative chamber during a plenary session on Thursday, following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Honourable Sani Madaki, a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from Kano State.
Honourable Aliyu Madaki stated that imposing such a big tariff hike at a time when citizens are still dealing with the consequences of the petrol price increase is callous.
In response to the motion, the House has directed that its committee on power, once formed, hold dialogue with NERC.
The objective, the House said, is to reach a shared understanding and establish an agreement on how to handle the proposed tariff hike while keeping in mind the current economic concerns.
The legislatures said they remain committed to protecting Nigerians’ interests and ensuring that the decisions of the regulatory agency are in line with the welfare of citizens.
