Women’s World Cup: Nigeria upset co-hosts, Australia, in five-goal thriller

Nigeria upset Australia at the FIFA Women’s World Cup as the Super Falcons snatched a sweet 3-2 win at Brisbane Stadium.

Emily van Egmond gave Australia the lead at the end of the first half, only for Nigeria to equalize before halftime.

Nigerian sides gave the co-hosts a tough timea as Osinachi Ohale’s header made it 2-1.

Asisat Oshoala scored to cement the lead by three goals after poor communication between Australia’s Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold. The FC Barcelona of Spain player Asisat is the first Nigerian woman football player to score in three Women’s World Cups.

Nigeria held on to cruise to the much needed victory despite a late goal from the Australians.

The result moved Nigeria to the top of Group B, tied on four points with Canada, while Australia is a point behind both before the final fixtures of the group on Monday.

Australia plays Canada in Melbourne and needs a win to go to the knockout stages, while Nigeria plays the already-eliminated Republic of Ireland in Brisbane at the same time.
