Breaking News: Spouse Detained On Suspicion Of Fatally Harming Wife Amid Heated Dispute

A man has been ordered into custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre on December 18, following allegations of murdering his wife, Mariam Awa.Matthew Isaac, aged 37, is accused of committing the crime on October 24, 2023, in the Igando area of Lagos State. The incident reportedly occurred during a heated argument between Isaac and his wife over his decision to travel alone to his hometown to visit his ailing father.

As the disagreement escalated, it turned physical, resulting in Isaac slamming his wife’s head against a wall, causing her to collapse. Upon realizing that she had died, Isaac contacted a friend, and together, they buried her in a shallow grave near their residence.

Matthew Isaac appeared before Magistrate Linda Balogun at a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba, Lagos State, facing a one-count charge of murder. The police prosecutor, Chekwube Okeh, informed the court that the defendant’s actions were in violation of Section 222 and punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. Okeh requested the court to remand the defendant in the correctional center pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The charge stated, “That you, Matthew Isaac, on October 24, 2023, around 12.15 am, at No. 15, Governor Road, Igando Oko Filling Station, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill the deceased, one Mariam Awa, by hitting her head on the wall, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendant did not enter a plea, and the magistrate ordered his remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Magistrate Balogun scheduled the case for further proceedings on January 24, 2023, awaiting advice from the DPP.
