The Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas, has announced the Federal Government’s plan to deploy security forces to address the growing threat posed by miscreants in Nigerian forests. Speaking at the Ministry’s top management retreat in Kaduna State, Abbas expressed concern over the increasing presence of bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists in the country’s forests.
During the retreat, themed ‘Policy Embedment and Prioritization of Key Action for a Renewed Hope in Environmental Management,’ Abbas highlighted the unfortunate situation where forests have become breeding grounds for criminal activities, causing harm to innocent Nigerians. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about this issue, and the Federal Government is taking decisive steps to enhance security in the affected areas.
The minister disclosed that collaborative efforts with the Military, DSS, Police, and other security agencies are underway to establish a robust security presence in the forests, aiming to counter the menace posed by various criminal elements. Abbas stated that the Federal Government is committed to eliminating illegal logging and other criminal activities that have made life unbearable in the forests.
Highlighting the importance of preserving the diverse tree species in the country, Abbas stressed the need for adequate protection. He assured that the government is actively working to address all environmental challenges and is considering the introduction of Coastal Guards to strengthen security in Nigeria’s coastal waters.
In conclusion, Minister Abbas outlined the government’s dedication to restoring order in the forests and ensuring the safety of citizens, underscoring the multifaceted approach being taken to tackle environmental challenges across the nation.
