Amidst the ongoing nationwide strike, the Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to Organized Labour, emphasizing that strike action is not a viable option as it would exacerbate hardship and suffering.

The party urged workers’ unions to prioritize renegotiation with the government regarding a new minimum wage, rather than resorting to industrial action.

Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, conveyed this message during an interview with journalists on Monday in Abuja, stressing the importance of dialogue over confrontation.

“Our immediate stance is that Organized Labour should refrain from imposing additional hardship on Nigerians,” Ifoh emphasized.

“The country is already grappling with numerous challenges, and further exacerbating the situation is unnecessary.”

Regarding the demand for a N494,000 minimum wage, Ifoh deemed it unrealistic and unsustainable, asserting that such a figure would strain Nigeria’s finances beyond capacity.

Instead, Ifoh advocated for continued engagement between the labour union and the federal government to reach a mutually agreeable figure.

“Negotiation should persist until a satisfactory resolution is reached.

“While the government’s offer may fall short of expectations, it’s essential for Organized Labour to pragmatically assess the situation and collaborate on a feasible solution”, Ifoh remarked.

In conclusion, Ifoh underscored the importance of ongoing negotiation, acknowledging the government’s shortcomings and the need for sustained dialogue to address workers’ concerns effectively.
