Ooni condemns attack on Muslims, orders arrest of head of Olorisha worshippers

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwunsi, has condemned the attack on Muslims by Oro worshipers in Ile Ife.

While ordering the arrest of the head of the Olorisha worshippers, the traditional ruler vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Speaking through his Second-in-Command, Obalufe of Ifeland, Oba Idowu Adediwura, Ooni expressed displeasure over the ugly incident adding that as the royal father of Christians, Muslims and traditionalists, and a leader who works to promote peaceful coexistence worldwide, there was no justification for turmoil in his home.

On Thursday evening, worshippers of Oro allegedly assaulted the Imam of the Idiomoh Mosque and other Muslims who were gathering for Salatul Asr at around 4:30pm.

Reports stated that the attackers brandished cutlasses and charms as they inflicted injuries on the Muslims, who are now receiving care at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC).

Osun State Commissioner of Police, SP Opalola Yemisi, confirmed the attack, with the Olobatala people targeting Muslims while they were engaged in worship.

Ooni expressed his conviction that followers of different religions should be able to coexist in peace and harmony. He highlighted the fact that diverse religious groups have long lived side by side in a spirit of tolerance and understanding, and urged them to continue doing so without any animosity.

He, however, pledged to restore the mosque that suffered damage and to reimburse the Imam for his medical bills.

On Friday, a palpable sense of fear pervaded Ile-Ife as Muslims protested the attack on some of their members in the mosque the night before. Roads were blocked off in an effort to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the assault.
