Lionel Messi lashed by PSG over Saudi Arabia trip

Argentina superstar Lionel Messi has been handed a two-week suspension by Paris Saint-Germain after he embarked on a personal promotional journey to Saudi Arabia without permission.

Messi, reports say, asked the club for permission to travel to the country, which he did on Sunday night after postponing a commercial trip there twice due to team defeats.

He was then suspended for two games and fined two weeks’ wages following a day of meetings between the club’s officials.

Messi , who is a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia, will not train or play for PSG during the period of his suspension.

According to reports in France, PSG will not renew Messi’s contract at the end of the season. The Argentina star’s current contract will expire this summer, as widely reported, though the Paris-based club has the option to trigger a clause for a third season.

Al Hilal, a Saudi Arabian club, wants to sign Messi this summer when his contract with PSG expires and is willing to pay him a massive £400 million for just one season in order to market a league that includes both Cristiano Ronaldo and the former Barcelona icon.
