Police detain Seun Kuti over assault of officer

Popular Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has been detained by the Nigerian police for assaulting one of its officers in a viral video.

This was made known in a post shared by the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his Twitter page on Monday.

The Lagos Police PRO said: “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative.

“He has been placed under arrest in line with the law. The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said he will provide legal services to Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, who sought his intervention following the singer’s alleged assault on a police officer in Lagos.

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on Sunday, ordered Mr Kuti’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman went viral on the Nigerian social media space.

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,” the statement read.

In the 12-second video, Seun Kuti, who was putting on a red shirt and white pair of trousers, was seen rough handling a policeman, who stood beside a Toyota Hilux police van. He then went ahead to slap the police officer, as he shouted, “You dey craze, you dey mad?”

A motorist, who filmed the incident from his car, was heard saying, “Omo na Kuti o. Na better news be this o.”

Seun vowed to turn himself in to the Police after the incident.
