Congolese government says air strikes on Sudan campus kill 15 of its citizens

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo says ten of its citizens were killed when their university complex was “bombarded” in air strikes in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, on Sunday.

In a statement, the foreign affairs ministry said it had “learned with deep dismay” of the killing of its citizens at the International University of Africa.

Minister Christophe Lutundula noted that the air strikes were “carried out by the regular army on an area occupied by civilian and unarmed populations, including foreign nationals, seriously wounded other compatriots”.

He added that the government was waiting for the Sudanese officials to shed more light about the incident while adding that “the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo is asking the Sudanese authorities to open a humanitarian corridor to enable it to evacuate wounded compatriots and those still stranded in Sudan.”

i-News Nigeria reported that the conflict has turned Khartoum, the capital of Sudan and other urban areas into battlegrounds, resulting in widespread theft and devastation of residential areas since fighting started on April 15.

More than 1.65 million people have been displaced as a result of the violence, with many fleeing to safer locations of Sudan and neighboring countries.
