Abuja High Court directs SSS to grant lawyers, family access to Emefiele

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has directed the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Bichi, to allow lawyers of the suspended governor of Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, Godwin Emefiele, to have access to him.

Mr Emefiele was apprehended at his house in Lagos and flown to the headquarters of the secret police, where he is facing interrogation.

The ex-CBN boss was accused of financing terrorism, but no formal charges were brought against him.

He was arrested barely a day after President Bola Tinubu suspended him from office.

Concerned about his client’s ongoing detention by the SSS, Mr Emefiele’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu, petitioned the court, requesting that the secret service allow him access to his client.

When the case was heard on Friday, the lawyer informed the court that he had submitted letters to the SSS on June 14th, requesting an audience with Mr Emefiele, but the SSS had not responded.

However, the SSS’s lawyer, I Awo, informed the judge that the service was willing to grant such demands.

The judge later compelled the SSS to allow Mr Emefiele’s lawyers and family members access to him after listening to the lawyers in the petition.

Recall that Mr. Emefiele was suspended from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday.

The suspension was ascribed to an ongoing inquiry into his office and what the presidency described as planned reforms in the economy’s financial sector.
