Key Five Points About Acting Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun Olukayode

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Egbetokun Olukayode, his former Chief Security Officer, as the acting Inspector General of Police, following the retirement of the previous IG.Egbetokun was recently approved as a Deputy-Inspector General of Police, representing the South-West geopolitical zone, by the Police Service Commission.

He takes over from DIG Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, who retired on March 15 of this year.

The announcement of Egbetokun’s appointment as IG was made by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary-General to the Federation.

Here are five important details about the newly appointed acting IGP:

  1. Former Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Egbetokun replaces Usman Baba as the acting Inspector General of Police.
  2. He served as the Chief Security Officer to President Tinubu when Tinubu was the Governor of Lagos State in 1999.
  3. Egbetokun has held various positions throughout his career, including Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, Squadron Commander of Mopol 5 in Benin City, Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit in FCT Command, Chief Superintendent of Police in Administration at Lagos State Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Area Commander in Osogbo, Osun State Command, and Area Commander in Gusau, Zamfara State Command.
  4. He graduated from the University of Lagos with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in June 1987. Before joining the Police Force, he briefly worked as a Mathematics lecturer at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.
  5. Egbetokun holds an MSc in Engineering Analysis from UNILAG, a Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Delta State University in Abraka, and an MBA from Lagos State University in Ojo
