Oyo Govt denies rumours of Cholera outbreak, urges adherence to preventive measures 

The Oyo State Government has denied reports of a cholera outbreak making the rounds, stating that the state has no record of the deadly disease.

Dr. Olusoji Adeyanju, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, stated in a statement issued on Friday and made available to newsmen in Ibadan that a medical team had been placed on watch to prevent unforeseen eventualities.

The Permanent Secretary explained that cholera is an infection that may be transmitted from person to person through various channels, most especially where the source of drinking water and foods are polluted or contaminated but emphasised that there is no outbreak of the disease in Oyo State, South western Nigeria.

He called on the people of the state not to drink water from doubtful sources and avoid eating food prepared in non – hygienic environments.

The statement reads :”Surveillance and notification officers in the State and Local Governments have been put on alert to institute preventive measures and sensitization of residents in markets and other places with a view to responding to any outbreak of such disease in the State.

“This disease is suspected to be highly contagious. It is an infection that may be transmitted from person to person through various channels, most especially where the source of drinking water and foods are polluted or contaminated.”

“ Our people at the Ministry are currently on field sensitizing the the masses on how to prevent cholera”

Dr. Adeyanju, implored the people of the state to improve on their personal hygiene and abide by the disease preventive measures.

“ Our people are advised not to drink water from doubtful sources and avoid eating food prepared in non – hygienic environment.” The statement said.
