Eat, Rest, Drive Safely To Avoid Crashes- VIO Urges Motorists

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has urged motorists to always eat, rest, and drive safely to avoid Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) on highways in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Dr Yusuf Suberu, the National Coordinator and Mayor of the Federation, FCT Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), advised in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

Suberu attributed most of the road crashes on the highways to fatigue-related problems, adding that lack of sleep could impair judgement and reaction, thereby increasing the risk of crashes.

He said dehydration and poor nutrition could also contribute to fatigue, adding that good food helps to keep the body fit and gallant.

According to him, “Get enough sleep. Ensure you rested well before getting behind the wheel. If you are on a long road trip, ensure to take a break every couple of hours to stretch, walk around, and refresh your mind.

“Stay hydrated and eat healthy snacks. Make sure you drink plenty of water and eat nutritious snacks to stay alert. Listening to music or podcasts can help reduce stress and keep you focused on the road.

“If you feel stressed while driving, take a few deep breaths or try other relaxation techniques to calm your mind.

“Also, avoid distractions by putting away your phone, avoid eating or drinking while driving, and focus on the road ahead to reduce stress and fatigue.

“Eat good food, get adequate rest, and drive well and safely to arrive safely. Doing this will not only help you but also help people around you,” he said.

Suberu called on drivers and passengers to cooperate with all the security personnel, especially road safety officers and VIO on the road, to avoid crashes.

He also called on motorists to shun reckless driving or any form of disobedience to traffic rules and regulations to prevent fatalities or loss of lives and property.
