The Federal Government has announced its decision to halt the issuance of licenses to gas companies lacking the capability to construct gas distribution pipelines.

The Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, revealed this directive during his visit to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. Ekpo’s visit followed a tragic incident involving a CNG gas truck owned by Gasco Marine, which experienced a brake failure, resulting in a fatal explosion at Ita Oshin.

Expressing concern over the incident, Ekpo, representing President Bola Tinubu, underscored the necessity of transitioning from fossil fuel to CNG. He emphasized that licenses would only be granted to companies with the infrastructure to pipe CNG directly to consumers, thereby eliminating the risks associated with virtual gas transportation.

The government’s focus, Ekpo stated, is on accelerating the development of gas pipeline infrastructure to ensure safer transportation methods and prevent further tragedies on the roads.

Despite the recent accident, Ekpo reiterated the advantages of CNG over petrol, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in the alternative fuel source. He also stressed the importance of using quality cylinders for gas distribution to mitigate risks.

Assuring the public of safety measures, Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority, highlighted collaborative efforts with relevant agencies to prevent similar accidents. Training programs for truck drivers are being organized to enhance road safety.

In response, Governor Dapo Abiodun commended the government’s proactive stance and pledged support for the CNG initiative.
