Seun Kuti released from Police custody after meeting bail conditions

Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has been released from police custody after fulfilling the requirements for his bail.

His lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), confirmed that Kuti was released on Tuesday evening around 7:30 pm.

According to his lawyer, Seun Kuti was released to his family after meeting the necessary bail conditions.

The legal team further confirmed that he would be present at the magistrate court on Wednesday for the scheduled proceedings, which were adjourned today. The purpose of the upcoming hearing is to receive the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP)’s advice regarding the case.

Earlier today, the Chief Magistrates Court in the Yaba area of Lagos failed to convene for Seun Kuti’s case. While no official reason was given for the absence of Magistrate Justice Adeola Olatubosun, who had been presiding over the case, a source indicated that she was attending a conference.

Seun Kuti was present at the magistrate court, but upon learning of the magistrate’s absence, he was immediately taken to the Panti police station. One of Kuti’s lawyers informed Channels Television that the case had been adjourned until Wednesday, May 24.

The legal team also stated that they followed the police to Panti in order to facilitate their client’s release, as the four additional days of remand granted by the court were set to expire today.

Outside the court premises, a group calling themselves members of the “Free Seun Kuti campaign” staged a protest, demanding the immediate release of the afrobeat singer.
