Saudi Arabia, US welcome renewal of ceasefire deal between Sudanese Army, Rapid Support Forces

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States have commended the renewal of a five-day ceasefire agreement between Sudan’s warring military factions.

Sudan’s warring military factions agreed on Monday to a five-day extension of a ceasefire agreement, despite heavy clashes in the capital.

The latest truce agreement was announced by Riyadh and Washington, who also brokered the last ceasefire.

The two countries said in a joint statement that although the truce had not been fully observed, but that it had allowed aid to reach two million people in Sudan.

“The extension will provide time for further humanitarian assistance, restoration of essential services, and discussion of a potential longer-term extension,” the statement said.

The US and Saudi Arabia have been mediating discussions between the military and the RSF in the Saudi port city of Jeddah for weeks. So far, seven cease-fires have been announced, all of which have been violated to some extent.

The World Food Programme (WFP) earlier said it had been able to make its first food distributions in Khartoum since the beginning of the fighting due to the ceasefire deal.

According to the UN food agency, up to 2.5 million people in Sudan are expected to go hungry in the coming months, bringing the total number of people impacted by acute food insecurity to more than 19 million.

Since the fighting broke out six weeks ago, Sudan’s health ministry said over 700 people have been killed with the exact total is likely.

The UN and other international community have called for the peaceful resolution of the conflict in order to bring Sudan back to a democratic path.
