Femi Gbajabiamila bows out, resigns position as member House of Rep

Femi Gbajabiamila, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has brought his long stay at the Green Chamber to an end as he officially resigned his position as a lawmaker.

The experienced lawmaker has taken up his new role as the chief of staff to President Bola Tinubu.

The president Tinubu had earlier appointed Gbajabiamila as one of his key aides on June 2

His letter of withdrawal from legislative duties was read by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary on Wednesday.

The Chief of Staff has so far spent two decades in the lower chamber and was re-elected to represent Surulere 1 federal constituency in the February 25 polls.

With the latest development, Surulere I Federal Constituency has now been declared vacant in accordance with Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Section 68 of the 1999 constitution says a “Member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the House of which he is a member if –

“He becomes President, Vice-President, Governor, Deputy Governor or a Minister of the Government of the Federation or a Commissioner of the Government of a State or a Special Adviser.”

Who is  Femi Gbajabiamila

Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila CFR, was born 25 June 1962. He’s a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Gbajabiamila has served as Speaker of the House of Representatives since 2019.

The new Chief of Staff to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003, where he represented the Surulere I constituency of Lagos State.

A Nigerian national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) was conferred on him by President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.
