Anambra police detain woman for beating mother

Men of the Nigerian Police of the Abagana Division, Anambra State, have rescued an aged woman brutally mistreated by her daughter at Umudunu village, Abagana, in a video that has gone viral.

The State’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the suspect, Ukamaka Udeugbo, is 50 years old and the biological daughter of the woman in the viral video clip.

The suspect, in the video, whipped the naked elderly woman and threw buckets of water at her while she lay on the floor.

According to the press release, the suspect has been arrested and is being held for prosecution.

Aderemi Adeoye, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State CID in the public interest and that the aged woman be handed over to the Commissioner for Women Affairs for sufficient care by the State Government.

The suspect will be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the inquiry, according to the statement.

In a related development, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Justice in Anambra state, Mrs Ify Obinabo, has provided shelter for the elderly woman, who is now in the care of the government.

The woman was taken to the hospital immediately for a medical checkup and treatment.

Mrs. Obinabo, while regretting the degree of abuse in the society recently, cautioned offenders, particularly women, to be agents of change or face prosecution.
