Senate sets up committee to probe abuse of firearms by Customs

A special committee led by Senator Francis Fadahunsi, appointed by the senate, has been established to examine the misuse of firearms by officials from the Nigeria Customs Service in Katsina State and at various border communities across the country.

The committee’s primary objective is to investigate several incidents in Katsina.

These include alleged killings of residents by Customs officials during border drills in August 2021, the killing of 10 individuals by Customs officials in February 2021 within the Jibia Local Government Area of the state, and the recent attack on Jabiru Tsauri, Chief of Staff to the Katsina State Governor, on July 13, 2023.

The senate decided to initiate this investigation into the actions of Customs officials following Senator Abdulazeez Yar’adua’s presentation of a matter of urgent public importance during the plenary session held on Wednesday.

Once the inquiry is concluded, the ad hoc committee will provide recommendations and submit a report to the Senate within a period of six weeks.

In the meantime, the House of Representatives has called for the suspension of the concession of the Abuja and Kano airports until their investigation is completed.
